Simon Gabriel

It has been a rough go for our little one. From his premature birth to now. He has fought many battles in his 18 months that children never see. And now, he battles again.

Simon was diagnosed with RSV 8 days ago. He did well throughout the week, but was showing signs that he was at his end of fighting early Friday morning. I called the doctor to get him in for more chest x-rays (suspecting pneumonia) and was told just to take him into the hospital. As we prepared to head out, he crashed. I ended up on the phone with 9-1-1 dispatch and requested an ambulance. Simon was on 10 liters of oxygen while on the ambulance to the hospital. Once there, it took three hours to stabilize him in the ER. We were moved to the pediatric floor for the duration of this virus.

Early Saturday Morning, Simon began struggling a bit. By 4 am, he was back on 10 liters of oxygen and the options were slim. He was intubated and placed on ventilator support a short while later. Flight for Life was called and Simon flew by himself from Cheyenne to Children’s hospital in Aurora (Denver), CO. With no room for myself or Rob, we made the trip as quickly (and safely!) as possible. We arrived about 1 hour after he landed at the hospital.

Seeing Simon on a ventilator as a preemie wasn’t near this difficult. He is really sick and just doesn’t have the physical energy to fight. In 48 hours, he coded (yes, I’m talking about moments from death here) 7 times. The doctors here are suspecting tracheomalacia as part of the culprit. His trach is soft and collapses on itself, stopping his breathing and makes resuscitation very difficult.

I do have pictures of him in the hospital here, although I am not sure anyone would want to see them. But please, please, if you haven’t caught my updates on facebook, please keep him in your prayers.

 2009: A year of change

In so many ways!  My family has gone through major life changes, faced a heart wrenching situation, and through it all – have survived.  While surviving isn’t my goal – and never is – I’m glad that we have done just that when the options could have been much worse.

As 2009 is quickly drawing to a close, I am thrilled to say I look forward to 2010.  While I’ve already begun my new year overhaul, I hope that you’ll love the fun to come.

A few tidbits of 2010 for Life’s Approbation:

  • Partaking in Blog 365
  • Sharing more about Approbation, the meaning and how a 14th century word fills my home and life.

While 2009 was an amazing blessing in disguise, 2010 is in my hands and I’m going to make it the best year to date…

Won’t you stay and join?

 Christmas Wishes and Lists

I was in middle school when I first heard Amy Grant’s Grown Up Christmas List.  I remember the elation I felt as I listened to the words of the song.  It is beautiful, inspirational and true.

As an adult, my husband often reminds me to do for myself.  Especially this time of year.  I am always giving and doing for everyone else.  It is in selflessness that I am at peace, most happy, and feel as though I’m living my life to the fullest.

This year, my wish is to bring a smile to my family, friends and at least ten random people in our community.  Giving to the area you reside gives back to you, even if you don’t see the contributions.  Give, always.

So my Christmas List for 2009

  • To have healthy children
  • To feel healthy myself
  • To remember and thank everyone that has brought us to where we are now
  • Enough food to not be hungry
  • Drink to not be thirsty
  • Smiles to carry us through difficult challenges
  • Memories to last a lifetime
  • Laughter to fill our home
  • And time…

Time is so precious, limited and under-utilized.  I want my family to all learn how to utilize time in the most positive manner, increasing our time together, sharing and growing.  If only I could put time in a bottle…

 Beautiful

Is your life beautiful?

Do you take the chance to live every moment?  Or do you find yourself submerged in every other menial task and allow it to consume your being?

Life is beautiful, if you so allow.

There are millions of people who are faced with potential loss this holiday season.  Families are praying for good news from doctors, that a surgery is successful and hoping for another day, week, month and year.

Today is beautiful.  Having family and friends close makes each moment worth living, loving and giving.

Give yourself to those around and remember, today is a gift…

It is all about the Spirit.

As I was perusing some parenting forums this afternoon, a common question this time of year is the amount of money spent on each child for Christmas.  I read through various responses and even added my own.  But as I moved onto other tasks online, I found myself thinking about the Spirit of Christmas and what it means to brighten the lives of others.

It doesn’t take much to extend your hand and heart to help out another person during the holiday season.  A few moments of your time or a few dollars can mean an amazing Spirit-filled holiday celebration for them.

As you think about your own life and how others have touched your soul, I encourage you to watch the following video.

Christmas Shoes

And, as we move towards Christmas, I will be continuing to post songs and videos to help you remember why life is an approbation.
