It has been a rough go for our little one. From his premature birth to now. He has fought many battles in his 18 months that children never see. And now, he battles again.
Simon was diagnosed with RSV 8 days ago. He did well throughout the week, but was showing signs that he was at his end of fighting early Friday morning. I called the doctor to get him in for more chest x-rays (suspecting pneumonia) and was told just to take him into the hospital. As we prepared to head out, he crashed. I ended up on the phone with 9-1-1 dispatch and requested an ambulance. Simon was on 10 liters of oxygen while on the ambulance to the hospital. Once there, it took three hours to stabilize him in the ER. We were moved to the pediatric floor for the duration of this virus.
Early Saturday Morning, Simon began struggling a bit. By 4 am, he was back on 10 liters of oxygen and the options were slim. He was intubated and placed on ventilator support a short while later. Flight for Life was called and Simon flew by himself from Cheyenne to Children’s hospital in Aurora (Denver), CO. With no room for myself or Rob, we made the trip as quickly (and safely!) as possible. We arrived about 1 hour after he landed at the hospital.
Seeing Simon on a ventilator as a preemie wasn’t near this difficult. He is really sick and just doesn’t have the physical energy to fight. In 48 hours, he coded (yes, I’m talking about moments from death here) 7 times. The doctors here are suspecting tracheomalacia as part of the culprit. His trach is soft and collapses on itself, stopping his breathing and makes resuscitation very difficult.
I do have pictures of him in the hospital here, although I am not sure anyone would want to see them. But please, please, if you haven’t caught my updates on facebook, please keep him in your prayers.
